I had a powerful and encouraging conversation with publicist Meg McAllister yesterday. She’s a true professional and I highly recommend her if your able to afford a publicist. Meg really broke down the things I needed to hear, including the challenging aspects of being a self-published author with so little funds to spare. It left me thinking, I really need to get on the ball with this social media thing. It’s so much more than just having a page, but instead engaging your audience.
After our discussion ended, I received a phone call from an employee at Harpo Studios in Chicago, IL. She sent me a direct message in Twitter the day prior asking if I would like to be an OWNers ‘takeover’. For those of you hearing this for the first time, OWNers ‘takeover’ is when a #OWNAmbassador Twitter user is logged into and Tweeting via OWNers Twitter account.
Of course, I was more than happy to do the job.
Will anything more come out of being and OWNers ‘takeover’? Like getting more recognition for Feminine Transitions for example. I’m honestly not sure. Yet, I do know that the Universe puts everything into alignment in the right place, at the right time.
To that I say, I am on the right path. That’s not a call that everyone receives. I’m more than happy to take the blessings that follow.
Additionally, I truly learned the art of engaging an audience. How coincidental is it that one of the very things I spoke about earlier with Meg I had to put into action? I am a visual and hands on learner so I got it completely.
Last night I tweeted for the Haves and Have Nots. Tonight will be Tyler Perry’s Love Thy Neighbor , airing every Wednesday at 9PM EST. Are you on Twitter? If so, follow me at @AlysciaCPhoto and @OWNers, the account I’m taking over, and join me for the tweet party. I’ll be logged on 15-30 minutes prior to the start of the show.
I hope to see you there!
Oprah Winfrey is right in tune with the message of Feminine Transitions. Now to get her to see it… http://www.FeminineTransitions.com
“For sure we live in a youth-obsessed culture that is constantly trying to tell us that if we’re not young and glowing and “hot,” we don’t matter. The entire television ratings/advertising system is set up to serve the 18-to-54 demographic. Which says to anyone outside that group: We don’t care about you. Yet this is a business predominantly run by executives all over 54.
I refuse to let a system, a culture, a distorted view of reality tell me I don’t matter. That only happens when we buy into the propaganda. People who lie about their age are denying the truth and contributing to a sickness pervading our society—the sickness of wanting to be what you’re not.
Denial leads to delusion.
I know for sure that only by owning who and what you are can you step into the fullness of life. Every year should teach you something valuable; whether you get the lesson is up to you. Every year brings you closer to expressing your whole and healed self.
I celebrate that. Honor it. Hold it in reverence. And I’m grateful for every age I’m blessed to become.” ~Oprah Winfrey
Please join me on Thursday, May 23, 2013 from 6:00-8:00pm for “True Beauty is Natural”. I will do a presentation on my upcoming book Feminine Transitions: A Photographic Celebration of Natural Beauty.
Women’s National Democratic Club
1526 New Hampshire Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20036
Date: Thursday, May 23, 2013
Time: 6:00 – 8:00pm
Visit WNDC website for detailed information.
“True Beauty is Natural” Speaker Reception will be a particularly special evening because two graduating seniors from the School Without Walls will receive Ruth G. Nadel Leadership Awards, based on applications which showed their academic achievements, community activities, and potential for public service. These students participated in the Young Woman’s Leadership Program, WNDC’s partnership with this DC public college-preparatory high school, through which students attend several Club events. Members are urged to attend and meet the award winners, their classmates, and their teacher.
Come out and show your support. I’ll see you there!
If you missed it, here are a few photos from the event.
I’m happy to say that Feminine Transitions is almost completed. My team and I are doing the final edits and will be completed this month. I am still expecting to receive the copies in late June (most likely the last week). It’s the worst felling to support a project and never receive updates (for me at least). With that in mind, I will continue to keep everyone updated on my progress.
In the meantime, I have received the perk gifts as described on my Indiegogo fundraiser. I’m getting closer and feeling so very excited! I do look forward to mailing off the actual book and chosen perks to my contributors.
Didn’t get the chance to support the fundraiser for Feminine Transitions? No problem. Pre-order now and your copy/copies will be shipped with the others.
Thanks again for your continued support!
“If you’re blessed enough to grow older, which is how I look at aging (I think often of all the angels of 9/11 who won’t), there’s so much wisdom to be gained from people who are celebrating the process with vibrancy and vigor and grace.” ~Oprah Winfrey
I am now 22 days into Feminine Transitions Book Fundraiser campaign on Indiegogo. It has been 22 days of sleepless nights, social media campaigning, networking and so much more…all while tending to my 3 beautiful children. I must admit, fundraising is an art. Although I am learning more than I did in my previous crowd funding campaigns, I have not fully mastered the art of it all. On the bright side, I am still able to push through. Not only because of my determination to make it happen, but mostly due to the support of my BACKERS!

I haven’t blogged in a while as I’m heavily indulged in Feminine Transitions. Although I am enjoying the process I must admit it’s bitter-sweet. I love the creative aspect of this journey and I’m truly enjoying the folks I’m meeting along the way. However, I would honestly prefer to leave the technical part into the hands of a professional (in that particular area). On the bright side, I am learning more than I’ve ever known about book publishing and the energy, time, creative and technical aspects involved in it.
I finally found a graphic artist to layout the design for me. This is where my project is at the moment. Presently, I’m gathering leads info for online, radio and TV interviews. As of last week, my press kit is complete. Since writing is not one of my strengths (and I’m not afraid to admit) I’ve had great success hiring contractors from Elance to complete writing materials, including my press kit. A job well done it was!
Here are a few mock-up pages:
More work has to be done but Feminine Transitions is closer to its completion. Travel exhibits and speaking tours are to come. I’ll continue to keep you posted along the way. Or feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. Thank you to everyone who has contributed by making a donation or pre-order. Know that I am working diligently to publish this baby.
