FROM DREAMS TO REALITY: A JOURNEY OF GRATITUDE AND GRIT

I’m writing this with a grateful heart and soul for all those who’ve supported me and my numerous passion projects throughout the years. It has been far from easy, and often times folks see my end result (the success) and assume I effortlessly brought it to fruition.

To that end, I say that giving birth to all I’ve done and will continue to do is definitely not for the faint of heart.

Understandably, people don’t see what happens behind the scenes. My moments of doubt—challenges that popped up out of the blue—left me in tears, wondering if this was all worth it.

It’s hard.

Some days are easier than others, but the one thing I consistently do in these moments is allow myself the time to grieve, then pick myself back up and keep going. As dark as it may feel, I always see the light at the end of the tunnel.

The graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered, all because someone was too afraid to take that first step, keep with the problem, or be determined to carry out their dream.”― Les Brown

I will not be that person in Les Brown’s quote, so I always push through my fears and doubts, knowing that one way or another, it will all come together and be worth the while—success!

Success for me isn’t a high number of likes, views, or money. Success is the impact that I create. It is leading by example for my children and the generation to come.

Money, of course, is necessary for survival, but I don’t let it dictate what I’m most passionate about.

I left corporate America back in 2007. I couldn’t see myself living to accomplish someone else’s dream while mine sat on the back burner.

It was the hard decision I made, with the understanding that my consistent income, insurance, and other comforts that came with having a well-paid 9-to-5 would disappear.

But I saw the bigger picture. I had bigger dreams. For that and what I’ve accomplished by being brave enough to follow my desire, I have no regrets. The money and the comforts will come with the alignment that the universe has prepared me for.

In that reflection, with a grateful heart, thank you to those who rode with me, who supported me (monetary or otherwise), and who encouraged me to keep going. May you also align with your purpose and passion.

Cheers!

PS

As I reflect on the journey of bringing my dreams to life, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible support that has brought my campaign to an amazing milestone – 87% funded! With the finish line in sight and the campaign drawing to a close soon, your support has never been more critical or appreciated.

Join me in these final moments to push through to 100%. Your contribution, no matter the size, can make a monumental difference. Every share, every contribution, and every word of support brings me closer to sharing this story with the world.

Thank you for being a part of my journey, for your generosity, and for believing in the power of storytelling.

Your Family & Friends Are Not Your Audience

Thirteen years ago, I started a new business venture into the world of Multi-Level Marketing. Three years later, I realized that MLM is not for me but I was grateful for the valuable lessons learned as an Independent Rep.

My first homework assignment was to read Your First Year In Network Marketing (anyone in MLM knows this book). It really prepared me for the world of business that I knew nothing about. The first being…

Your family and friends are not your audience.

It’s been years since I read the book so I’m explaining in paraphrase, but the author made it very clear that you will most likely…

  1. Get ignored by friends and family
  2. Not taken seriously by friends and family
  3. Lose a friend in the process

Although it was a tough reality (they really did ignore my calls) the lessons learned has been extremely helpful in my businesses after MLM. I realized…

My biggest supporters are people I don’t know.

That thought used to upset me, but I developed a good grasp at basking myself in the positive, mutual energy and support that comes from a total stranger. As crazy as it sounds, I used to play tug of war in my mind and block my blessings because I had an expectation of what support should look like –Friends and family. Now…

I welcome the village I’ve always asked for. It’s a beautiful revelation.

I must say, one of my biggest takeaways as an MLM, is the ability to be fearless (cold calls will do that to you). To cut to the chase and not care that your loved ones may not support your vision. If they aren’t living their dream how can they encompass the power of yours?

Hopefully this blog can enlighten the person it was intended for. For those who have the support, you’re blessed.

With 1 day left…

I reflect on the beautiful moments and girls/women that I met on my expedition with I Am More Than My Hair. I am so very grateful for the opportunity to grow in genuine friendship with many of the women. It’s a humbling experience to know that everyone trusted me, a complete stranger to most, to share their stories.

With 1 day left for my campaign on iFundWomen and 75% left to raise $6K, I have made peace with the fact that I will most likely not reach my funding goal. And presumably this means; it is time for me to retire my project and move on.

Black girl let's go of a balloon. She looks up at it.

What does this mean?  I will see I Am More Than My Hair film into completion, as far as I can possibly reach. First focusing on the expenses related to accessibly (for blind and deaf audiences) and possibly the sound mixing and color correction. I’m simply not able to submit I Am More Than My Hair to certain film festivals without a professionally completed final cut.

On the bright side, once it’s complete in the film festival circuit (November 2020) I will make it available online. I’m not sure of the platform as yet but I promise I’ll figure it out. Once I do, you’ll be the first to know.

This has been a 6 year journey. It is not a sad moment. In fact, for the community of supporters, we’ve won. It has been a challenging yet beautiful journey. And the gems gained… priceless.

As I wind down on, I Am More Than My Hair, I’m off working on another project. I am forever grateful for the people who supported me and believed in my projects along the years. You are appreciated.

Remember… for those interested, you can always make a tax-deductible donation via my fiscal sponsor Women in Film & Video.

Film Finishing Funds

A few weeks ago, I was excited to share my idea to launch a crowdfunding campaign with iFundWomen. It is a great platform, but after serious consideration of the time involved to manage that campaign, I decided it’s best that I stick with raising funds through my fiscal sponsor, Docs In Progress.

At first, the thought of crowdfunding, made me think of just asking friends and relatives for donations. But, it’s actually an invitation for others, for YOU, to join together to support me in the making of my film.

Over the next few months, I will send reminders and updates about my fundraiser to help bring my film into completion. In other words, Finishing Funds. If you’re interested in supporting me, please make a tax-deductible donation via the Docs In Progress project page for I Am More Than My Hair. And don’t forget to share! Sharing is caring.

Feminine TransitionsIn honor of her birthday month & my coming “out” last year, Wendy Simon, has launched a fundraiser for I Am More Than My Hair on Facebook. Wendy has not only participated in my project (both the film and book) but she has also been extremely supportive in consistently providing me with resources and ideas to help complete my project.

If you’re on Facebook, please join Wendy’s page, say hello and let her know how awesome she is for showing her support. She could have supported another non-profit in honor of her birthday, but she decided to contribute to the continuation of my work. Thank you Wendy!

Visit Wendy’s Facebook event page.

The date is set! Please join me in celebration of I Am More Than My Hair book release. It takes place on Sunday, September 9, 2018 from 5-7PM at Busboys and Poets in Hyattsville, MDPurchase tickets for $10. The book cost $39.95.

If you’re interested in volunteering at the event, you’ll receive a complimentary ticket. Please contact me and let me know.

Keeping it Simple: Keep a Child Alive Week #3

I’m moving into week 3 of my campaign to raise funds for Keep a Child Alive (KCA). In order to help keep things simple I’ve pointed out the highlights of my campaign.

1. What is a campaign? Work in an organized and active way toward a particular goal.
2. 100% of the proceeds from my campaign fund the youth-led peer support groups (the support groups simply help build confidence and empower the youth of KCA)
2. I DO NOT make $ from this. I’m volunteering.
3. Your donation will make a huge difference and positive impact for the children of KCA, who are all affected by HIV/AIDS.
4. The videos ARE MY CAMPAIGN. The individuals in the videos volunteer their time to say a message of encouragement for the youth of KCA.
5. Only $5 from multiple individuals is enough to successfully fund my campaign. Please make your $5 donation here.

I hope this helps to simplify my mission and gives you sufficient information to support the youth of Keep a Child Alive. I appreciate you!

Week #2: Filming for Keep a Child Alive

It’s week #2 into my my campaign for Keep a Child Alive (KCA). I’m still very busy planning, scheduling, filming and editing away. Thanks to the participants who’ve volunteered their time to allow me to film them saying a message of encouragement! Each individual brings something unique to the table and I’m sure it will be appreciated by the youth of KCA.

In order to make my campaign a success I still need to raise a total of $2,970. Remember that 100% of the proceeds will fund the youth-led peer support groups of Keep a Child Alive. You can donate as little as $5 and your donation is tax deductible. Visit my campaign page at www.support.keepachildalive.org/goto/Alyscia.

Here are week #2 round of videos.

Please donate to my campaign here. Remember, $1,000 covers a year’s worth of programming for the youth-led peer support group. With my goal of $3,000 3 groups will have 1-year worth or programming.

Here’s how you can help make this campaign a success…

  • Donate to the campaign. Instead of charging a fee to be filmed and edited, I ask that you please help fund the campaign and make it a success. No amount is too little.
  • Share, share, share! The more you can share on your social media platforms, email and word-of-mouth the more it will gain more attention and go viral (that’s the goal).

Thank you for your support!

My Campaign for Keep a Child Alive is Live!

As of today, my campaign for Keep a Child Alive (KCA) is live! I’ve been busy planning, scheduling and filming individual session and editing away. If it were for the generous time of people who’ve volunteered to send a message, the idea for my campaign would not be possible. I can’t thank these folks enough for your support.

Here’s the intro video to my campaign.

Here are the first round of videos. Please donate to my campaign here.

Remember, $1,000 covers a year’s worth of programming for a youth peer support group. With that in mind, I decided to launch a campaign that focuses on positive message for the youth in the youth-led support groups. My goal is to raise $3,000, which will cover programming for about 3 youth groups.

I truly appreciate your support!

I’m Launching a KCA Campaign!

A few weeks ago I received a Google alert about Alicia Keys and her stance on her #NoMakeup movement. In the recent past, a few celebrities spoke out against Photoshop manipulation but for the first time a celebrity has gained a significant amount of attention and admiration for a major lifestyle shift that is typically deemed as unacceptable in the Hollywood world.

Although our children learn about self-love and acceptance through their close family relationships (and in turn with themselves) public figures have a profound influence in the lives of our youth. This makes it so much more important that celebrities use their voice as positive platforms for much needed change.

Given that my focus as an author, filmmaker and photographer is about natural beauty, it was only natural that I reach out to Alicia Keys for an interview.

In the process of researching her agent and PR company, I found Keep A Child Alive (KCA), an organization, co-founded by Alicia Keys, that partner with grass-roots organizations to combat the physical, social and economic impact of HIV on children and families in Africa and India.

After diving into my research about KCA (I completely forgot about the interview and focused on the mission of the organization) I discovered the organization also encompasses youth empowerment. The youth-led peer support groups are helping young people living with HIV access support and confidence that they need to live healthy lives and build bright futures.

I immediately wanted to get involved. It’s all about empowerment… and that’s my focus.

About $1,000 covers a year’s worth of programming for a youth peer support group. With that in mind, I decided to launch a campaign that focuses on positive message for the youth in the youth-led support groups. My goal is to raise $3,000, which will cover programming for about 3 youth groups.

I will film 30-60 second videos of individuals voicing their message of encouragement for the children. Something similar to the recent video I filmed about beauty.

Here’s how you can help make this campaign a success…

  1. I need 20 individuals willing to volunteer a short amount of time (literally 5 minutes) to be filmed for the videos. Family members and friends… I will be calling you first.
  2. Donate to the campaign once I launch it. Instead of charging a fee to be filmed and edited, I ask that you please help fund the campaign and make it a success.
  3. Share, share, share! The more you can share on your platforms, the most it will gain more attention and go viral (that’s the goal).

It’s that simple!

KCA’s Black Ball will take place on Wednesday October 19, 2016. I will launch my campaign on Wednesday October 12, 2016, a week prior to the Ball. If happen to live or plan on visiting the New York City area, please considering purchasing a ticket for KCA’s Black Ball.

My campaign will end on World Aids Day, December 1, 2016 at approximately 11:59pm. No amount is too small and anything you can give is appreciated. Please be on the lookout for my newsletter about my campaign going live!

Awarded Young Mother of the Year!

I am honored to have been awarded the 2015 Young Mother of the Year with American Mothers, Inc. Anyone who knows me personally understands that I am very passionate about my role as a mother, as any other dedicated mom. Although my children recognize that they are most important in my life, I’ve recently discovered that taking care of me first helps not only makes me be the best mother I can possibly be but also the best caretaker for myself.

You know how we women have that women’s disease? We tend to everyone else’s needs first then us whatever energy we have left to take care of ourselves. Yeah that disease! I learned to shift my priorities…for me.

This doesn’t mean that I still don’t tend to my families needs (it’s in my genes:). I just had to incorporate changes that gave me self-fulfillment. That sense of joy in doing what makes me happy. And I must admit…making them happy gives me joy as well.

I’m looking forward to meeting other like-minded moms at the convention on April 23-25, 2015 (two weeks from now) and giving my story behind why being a mom is important to me and why I do what I do as an individual, mother, wife, artist, author, activist…and my journey continues.

Friendly Reminder…

My fundraiser for my upcoming project, I Am More Than My Hair, has 42 days left to reach my goal of $15,000. Please make a donation – no amount is too small – and SHARE with family, friends and social media platforms.  Donate HERE!

Thank you!

Kiva Zip | A and C Books, LLC

Kiva Zip | A and C Books, LLC.

I’m only 5 contributors away from my loan going public on Kiva Zip. This means, my campaign will go live on the site for the public to see once I reach my goal of 5 more contributors. I’d really appreciate it if you could contribute as little as $5 to my loan!

This loan is important because it will allow me to expand my message of social change to an audience of over 30,000 at the Green Festival in Los Angeles, CA. I am also connecting with several Women’s Studies Programs to inquire about being a guest speaker their classrooms. In case you lost the link, here it is again: https://zip.kiva.org/loans/5380/i/u0hr

This is a loan, not a donation, so your money will be returned as I pay back my loan. Your support means a lot to me! Hope that you can help with a loan of $5 (or more) and share this with your network!

If you prefer sponsorship opportunities, visit my Speaker Sponsor profile here.

Thank you!

A Special Shout Out To My Supporters!!!

“If you’re blessed enough to grow older, which is how I look at aging (I think often of all the angels of 9/11 who won’t), there’s so much wisdom to be gained from people who are celebrating the process with vibrancy and vigor and grace.” ~Oprah Winfrey

I am now 22 days into Feminine Transitions Book Fundraiser campaign on Indiegogo.  It has been 22 days of sleepless nights, social media campaigning, networking and so much more…all while tending to my 3 beautiful children. I must admit, fundraising is an art. Although I am learning more than I did in my previous crowd funding campaigns, I have not fully mastered the art of it all.  On the bright side, I am still able to push through.  Not only because of my determination to make it happen, but mostly due to the support of my BACKERS!
